Looking to Attract More Millennial Customers?

Marketing Strategies Imperative for Growing Your Millennial Customer Base
The Millennial generation can be defined in many ways. They are people born between the early 1980s and 2000. They represent nearly one-fourth of the total U.S. population at 80 million strong. They have a cumulative annual buying power of $200 billion. No matter how you define this young consumer group, one thing is certain, it is imperative that your business tap into it. However, gaining the attention of this lucrative population may require a bit of a strategic marketing shift.
Below are just a few marketing best practices to help your business connect with Millennials:
- Be Available
Millennials have had access to the Internet, cell phones and computers most, if not all of their lives; therefore, they obtain new information quickly and on-demand. Set up your business to respond to inquiries within hours, if not within minutes. - Have a Social Media Presence
As you know, a presence on social media is a must to reach this generation. For example, Instagram’s largest demographic is 18-29 year-olds with 59 percent of its users falling into this age category. However, depending upon your type of business, certain social media sites may be more important than others. Once you determine the best social media sites to have a presence on, post frequently and always interact with your followers when they comment. - Create Authenticity
Consider working with influencers, such as Instagrammers, vloggers or bloggers, because Millennials often turn to them before making a purchase decision. These influencers are important for building trust with your followers. The content often educates and empowers Millennials to chase new experiences, not necessarily just things. - Demonstrate Social Proof
Ensure your business has customer reviews on review websites (i.e. Yelp, Google My Business, Facebook and Trip Advisor). These sites have a huge number of visitors every month. For example, Google My Business has an average of almost 160 million visitors per month, which represents almost 35 percent of all U.S. Internet traffic. It is critical that you ask loyal customers to write reviews for you. Follow up on all reviews, and thank customers for their business. If a customer leaves a negative review, reply personally to fix the issue. Millennials rely on these platforms as affirmation they are making the right purchase decision. - Use Video
Sixty percent of Millennials prefer watching videos over reading long form. Use a 45 second to two-minute video to market your product or service. If you can add an element of humor that causes the video to go viral, you have reached the ultimate marketing pinnacle.
